Balenă cu aripioare lungi — Humpback Whale
Megaptera novaeangliae Borowski, 1781
It lives in the world oceans and seas; during its migration it may cover up to 25,000 km annually. It is considered a low risk species, being less endangered than other whale species.
This is one of the largest whale species currently, while the adults may reach 12 – 16 meters in length and weighing up to 36 tons. They feed only in summer time in the polar sea waters, and migrate to the tropical and subtropical waters for breeding and to rear their cubs in winter time, while living during this period based on their accumulated fat reserves. Their food is mainly formed of crustacean and small size fish.
